Ice cream van operators, fearing the imminent threat to their decades-long businesses posed by proposed bans near schools, can now breathe a sigh of relief. Following negotiations, a collective agreement has been reached to relax the restrictions initially proposed by the council.
Originally faced with a daunting 400-meter no-go zone, operators passionately contested the decision. After discussions and public consultation, the restriction has been significantly reduced. While initially revised to 200 meters, the final agreed-upon distance stands at 100 meters, pending approval at next week’s ruling cabinet meeting.
Sue Cairns, a prominent operator in Darfield and Thurnscoe, commended the support garnered from various stakeholders and credited the media, including the Chronicle, for bringing attention to their cause. She expressed gratitude for the revised restriction, stating that common sense has prevailed.
Les and Sarah Green, a husband-and-wife team with over 50 years of industry experience, echoed Cairns’ sentiments, emphasizing the workability of the 100-meter plan and expressing relief at the favorable outcome.
The council’s public health officials, while asserting the necessity of the changes to promote healthier choices for children, confirmed the adoption of the 100-meter restriction following research and public consultation.
