Several popular ice cream brands, including Friendly’s, Hershey’s, and Chipwich, are being recalled due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, prompting a cautionary advisory from health officials as summer temperatures rise.
Totally Cool, Inc., based in Maryland, initiated the recall after the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) detected traces of the bacteria in samples of its ice cream products. The recall affects items distributed nationwide through retail stores and home delivery.
Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a serious infection that poses significant risks, especially to vulnerable populations such as pregnant women, children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of listeriosis include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.
No illnesses related to the recalled products have been reported thus far, according to Totally Cool, Inc. However, consumers are advised to be vigilant and seek medical attention if they suspect they have consumed any affected products.
Earlier this year, the CDC investigated a Listeria outbreak linked to certain cheeses, highlighting the severity of the bacterium’s potential health impacts. The CDC recommends prompt medical consultation for anyone who may have ingested contaminated items.
As the recall unfolds, health officials emphasize the importance of awareness and caution, particularly in ensuring the safety of vulnerable populations and preventing the spread of foodborne illnesses.
