A popular Ottawa ice cream business, The Merry Dairy, is once again distributing tubs of its ice cream to various locations in the capital. This comeback follows the recent acquisition of a license from the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food, allowing the shop to sell its dairy-based ice cream at wholesale.
In July 2022, The Merry Dairy had to cease its wholesale operations when a ministry officer cited the need for a dairy plant license under Ontario’s Milk Act. This regulation halted the sale of their products to other businesses, though they continued to sell pints at their Fairmont Avenue location.
Owner Marlene Haley expressed her relief and excitement to CTV News Ottawa, announcing that The Merry Dairy received the necessary license earlier this month. With this approval, the business has resumed supplying ice cream to stores they previously partnered with and plans to expand further after the summer rush.
The return to wholesale operations marks a significant milestone for The Merry Dairy, reaffirming its place in Ottawa’s vibrant ice cream market and bringing joy to its loyal customers who can now find their favorite flavors at multiple locations.
