A widespread recall of more than 60 ice cream products has been initiated by Maryland-based Totally Cool, Inc., affecting well-known brands such as Jeni’s, Friendly’s, and Hershey’s due to potential contamination with listeria monocytogenes.
Listeria monocytogenes can lead to severe infections, particularly in vulnerable populations such as young children, elderly individuals, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms may include high fever, headaches, nausea, and can also pose risks of miscarriage or stillbirth in pregnant individuals.
While no illnesses have been reported, Totally Cool, Inc. has ceased production and distribution of all recalled items in response to FDA advisories. A detailed list of affected products is available on the FDA website, encompassing various popular items including Hershey’s ice cream cakes, cones, and sandwiches, as well as Friendly’s Celebration and Strawberry Krunch ice cream cakes.
Thirteen brands in total are impacted, including ChipWich and Cumberland Farms. Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, a notable participant in the recall, clarified that while listeria was not found in their Frozen Dessert Sandwiches or production equipment, all sandwiches are being voluntarily recalled as a precautionary measure.
