DC’s World Record Attempt for Largest ‘Human Ice Cream Cone’ Melts Away

by Alice

Washington, D.C.—In true American spirit, hundreds gathered on Capitol Hill this Fourth of July with a shared mission: to set a Guinness World Record for the largest “human ice cream cone.” Unfortunately, the sweltering summer heat proved too formidable, causing the attempt to melt away before it could be realized.

The event, organized by the civic group Barracks Row Main Street, followed a parade and aimed to assemble participants in a formation resembling an ice cream cone. Brian Ready, who leads the group, emphasized the community-driven nature of the effort.

“It’s summertime. It’s hot. It’s ice cream,” Ready said. “It’s a wonderful community event to get people out in the community. I think it’s a great record to do.”

Despite the enthusiasm, orchestrating a successful world record attempt presented significant challenges. Sarah Casson, an official adjudicator for Guinness World Records, highlighted the difficulties inherent in “mass participation” records.

“This is very challenging,” Casson remarked. “You have to get everyone in place, get everyone following the rules, and count them accurately. So that is a big challenge just to get everyone organized.”

Ultimately, the heat proved insurmountable, and the record attempt was unsuccessful. Nevertheless, the event showcased the community’s spirit and determination, embodying the essence of a classic American summer celebration.
