Local ice cream brand Inside Scoop has issued an apology and recalled its Pei Pa Koa-flavored ice cream following a directive from Malaysia’s Ministry of Health (MOH). The move comes after the MOH ordered an immediate halt to the sale of this particular flavor to safeguard public health and consumer safety.
Inside Scoop made the announcement on its social media platforms, expressing regret for the situation and outlining the steps taken to rectify the issue. The company stated, “Following advice from the Ministry of Health (KKM), we’re saying goodbye to our Pei Pa Koa ice cream flavor, effective immediately.” They assured customers that any online orders of this flavor would be addressed with refunds. “We’re really sorry for any hassle this might cause and we appreciate your understanding,” the statement added.
The controversy arose after social media posts went viral, revealing that the Pei Pa Koa ice cream was infused with cough syrup using a syringe. The MOH’s directive was based on a review by the Food Safety and Quality Programme (PKKM), which found the practice to be a violation of the Food Act 1983. This act prohibits the adulteration of food products with medicinal substances, a regulation aimed at protecting consumers from potential health risks.
The Pei Pa Koa cough syrup, a traditional remedy for sore throats and coughs, is registered with the Drug Control Authority of MOH and is not intended for use in food products. The syrup’s label includes contraindications, including warnings for pregnant women, making its use in edible items particularly concerning.
The MOH emphasized that violations of the Food Act could result in severe penalties, including fines up to RM20,000 or imprisonment for up to five years, or both.
In light of the recall, Inside Scoop has halted sales of the controversial ice cream flavor and is working to ensure that affected customers receive appropriate refunds. The company has also committed to reviewing its product safety practices to prevent similar issues in the future.
