HADLEY, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – Massachusetts has launched an enticing new Ice Cream Trail that celebrates some of the best ice cream shops and dairy farms across the state, including several notable spots in western Massachusetts. This initiative, perfect for cooling down on hot summer days, invites residents and tourists alike to explore at least 100 locations throughout the Bay State.
One featured destination is the North Hadley Sugar Shack and Market. Co-owner Shelly Boisvert expressed excitement about being included on the trail, stating, “It’s nice to be on the trail. We’re a non-dairy farm, but we, of course, support our local farmers and by using their product and our maple, it’s like a win-win situation.”
The trail, introduced last week, was a collaborative effort by the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources, the Massachusetts Dairy Promotion Board, and the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism. North Hadley Sugar Shack and Market, a nearly 30-year-old establishment, offers a unique flavor that has garnered much love: soft serve maple.
Martin Narus of Hadley shared his experience, saying, “I was looking for some ice cream flavors, like cookies and cream, and they didn’t have it, so I was like ‘Screw it, I’ll try the maple one.’ Turned out to be one of the best ice creams I’ve ever had in my life. Ever since that, I started coming once or twice a week.”
Boisvert noted that some customers are initially hesitant about the maple flavor, thinking it might be too sweet. However, many leave pleasantly surprised, often declaring it the best ice cream they’ve ever had.
Local businesses are optimistic that being part of the Ice Cream Trail will significantly boost their visibility and customer base. Cote added, “It’s bringing in more people. A lot of people have never come to us. Now that they see the trail, they know that we’re like a hidden treasure.”
With the trail offering a delightful array of ice cream experiences, it’s a sweet opportunity for everyone to enjoy some of the best flavors Massachusetts has to offer.
