Greece Among Europe’s Most Expensive for Ice Cream

Greece ranks as one of the most expensive countries in Europe for ice cream, with prices reaching at least 3.7 euros per liter in 2023

Data from Eurostat shows that Greece was among the top three nations in Europe for high ice cream prices last year. Austria took the lead, with an average price of 7.7 euros per liter, followed by Hungary at 4.8 euros per liter, and Greece in third place.

In contrast, Germany offered the most affordable ice cream, priced at just 1.8 euros per liter. Lithuania and the Czech Republic were close behind, with prices at 1.9 euros and 2.0 euros per liter, respectively. Germany also led Europe in ice cream production, producing 612 million liters in 2023. France and Italy followed with 568 million liters and 527 million liters, respectively.

Compared to 2022, the cost of ice cream across the European Union rose by 30 cents per liter in 2023, while overall production slightly decreased by 1.4%, dropping from 3.3 billion liters to 3.2 billion liters. Spain was the only EU country to increase its production, reaching 402 million liters in 2023.

According to ELSTAT data, ice cream prices across the EU saw nearly a 12% increase in 2023, particularly during the summer months. Additionally, EU countries exported 261 million kilograms of ice cream to non-EU countries in 2023, valued at 1.04 billion euros, while imports totaled 56 million kilograms, worth 217 million euros.
