When it comes to beating the summer heat, or enjoying a treat year-round, ice cream is a go-to favorite. Recently, I discovered a gem in downtown Sapulpa that takes this classic dessert to a whole new level. Little Taiyaki, which opened in July 2023 at 24 E. Dewey Ave., offers a unique blend of creamy soft serve and an array of colorful toppings, all served in a whimsical, fish-shaped cone.
The inspiration behind Little Taiyaki comes from the traditional Japanese taiyaki, a fish-shaped cake typically filled with sweet fillings. “Little Taiyaki originated from our love of traditional Japanese taiyaki and ice cream,” says owner Kathryn Villabrille. The shop combines this cultural favorite with soft serve, creating a treat that’s both delicious and visually appealing.
During my visit, my husband, a chocolate lover, chose a chocolate soft serve in a cup. The presentation was playful, with an inverted waffle cone shaped like a fish, perched adorably on top as if it were devouring the swirled peak. I opted for vanilla soft serve sprinkled with Cinnamon Toast Crunch, with Nutella filling the bottom of the cone. It was a delightful combination of flavors and textures.
Villabrille explained that the shop rotates its ice cream flavors monthly, with staples like pineapple dole, vanilla, and chocolate available year-round. “Each batch is made in small quantities to ensure freshness for our customers,” she says. One of the crowd favorites is the pineapple dole soft serve, paired with Biscoff cookie butter filling, honey graham dust, and fresh strawberries.
Little Taiyaki isn’t just about ice cream; it’s about creating a memorable dessert experience. Whether you’re a fan of classic flavors or looking to try something new, this shop in Sapulpa is sure to satisfy your sweet cravings.
