WARREN COUNTY — Whipty-Do, the popular ice cream shop located near King’s Island, is offering a unique treat this week: Grippo’s potato chips as an ice cream topping.
Joe Fields, co-owner of Whipty-Do with his wife Kristen, shared that this is the third time they are featuring the potato chips. The shop first introduced the concept in 2017, brought it back in 2018, and has not offered it since.
Fields recounted the initial decision to add the unusual topping. “I don’t know why, but I thought it would be really good,” he said. “It has a similar appeal to the French fries in a Frosty—salty and sweet, with a bit of heat.”
The ice cream shop is using crushed Grippo’s Bar-B-Q flavored potato chips for the topping. This is not their first venture into combining salty and sweet; a few years ago, they featured a Whipty-Whirl, which included vanilla ice cream mixed with potato chips and other candies.
“We like to offer both monthly and weekly specials,” Fields explained. “While this might be different from our usual offerings, it’s only available for one week. It’s a chance for people to try something new, and we’re enjoying it.”
Fields admitted that bringing back the Grippo’s cones was not initially planned. However, after a team meeting and a customer request, they decided to reintroduce the topping.
Whipty-Do launched the Grippo’s cone on Monday and expects to sell out by Friday or Saturday. The topping has been so popular that they have already had to restock their supply of potato chips.
In addition to the Grippo’s cones, the shop is featuring a Nutter Butter Parfait and a Whipty-Whirl with crushed Nutter Butters this month. Starting in September, Whipty-Do will introduce several new s’mores-inspired items.
