The shop, which opened this spring, offers 24 ice cream flavors along with three rotating pre-scooped options.
Anna Salentine, a Notre Dame junior who recently discovered she is gluten-free, praised the shop for its diverse offerings, including gluten-free and dairy-free options. She visited the store the day before classes began on August 26 and has since returned twice. Salentine noted the nostalgic appeal of finding her favorite birthday cake ice cream and appreciated the shop’s detailed nutritional information.
Tess Reinhart, another Notre Dame junior, observed that the shop’s popularity has led to long lines extending past the neighboring O’Rourke’s Public House. Despite the wait, patrons remain enthusiastic. Reinhart, who prefers dairy-free options, enjoyed the dairy-free mint Oreo flavor and commended the shop for its inclusivity towards various dietary needs.
Mary Williams, a sophomore, has visited Murphy’s six times, often with friends as part of an “ice cream challenge.” She appreciates the shop’s cozy atmosphere and connection to the Notre Dame community, highlighting the fun and personal touch of the establishment.
Salentine and Reinhart both expressed that the proximity of Murphy’s to campus adds a delightful element to their college experience. As Salentine put it, “Having an ice cream shop so close to campus is ‘dangerous,’ but it adds so much to the campus experience.”
With its broad range of flavors and welcoming environment, Murphy’s Ice Cream Shoppe is becoming a cherished local spot, offering a sweet escape for the Notre Dame community and beyond.
