Charleston, WV – A beloved Appalachian fruit is back in season, and some locals say it’s even better when served cold. Ellen’s Homemade Ice Cream, located in downtown Charleston, is giving the region’s paw paw fruit a delicious twist by transforming it into ice cream.
Known for its creamy texture and tropical-like flavor, paw paw is an ideal base for ice cream, according to the shop. Ellen’s is offering the unique treat in both pints and quarts for customers to grab and go, or they can enjoy it in-store in a cup or cone.
“People start calling us weeks, sometimes even a month ahead of time, just to make sure we’ll have it,” said Aaron Clark, co-owner of Ellen’s Homemade Ice Cream. “We really love making it, especially because everything is made right here in-house. We source locally, and local is always best.”
Paw paws are rarely found in grocery stores, making this seasonal ice cream a unique treat that’s all the more special while supplies last.
