The Funky Taco, a popular Boise restaurant, is now under new yet familiar ownership. Kasey Allen and Daniel Sell, co-founders and owners of the local ice cream shop The STIL, recently acquired The Funky Taco through their newly-formed hospitality group, The Oddbox Collective.
Allen and Sell, who have built success with The STIL since its first opening in 2017, created The Oddbox Collective to expand their influence into other food businesses. The opportunity to acquire The Funky Taco, located at 8th and Bannock Streets, arose just as they launched their new venture.
“We plan to continue evolving the restaurant,” Allen told BoiseDev. “We have some exciting ideas to infuse into the menu and operations in the near future.”
Sell added that they are eager to hear customer feedback as they refine the concept, saying, “We’re always looking to enhance that offering on 8th Street.”
The acquisition of The Funky Taco took place in August, with the new owners implementing several operational and menu changes since then. As of Monday, the restaurant is now open seven days a week—having previously been closed on Sundays and Mondays. The new hours are Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
One notable change is that tacos can now be ordered individually, allowing customers to mix and match, a feature that has long been requested, according to Allen. “That is something customers have asked for for a long time — the ability to create their perfect plate,” he explained.
The Funky Taco is also introducing a new happy hour menu, available Monday through Friday from 2 to 6 p.m. and all day on Taco Tuesdays. Specials include three street tacos for $12 or five for $18, $5 margaritas, half-off beer and wine, and 25% off cocktails.
Executive Chef Kevin Carreno and his team are central to the restaurant’s creative energy, with weekly specials that reflect the chefs’ innovation, Allen noted.
The overall changes reflect Allen and Sell’s vision to rethink and reimagine The Funky Taco while preserving its core identity. “We’re aiming for all the best elements of The Funky Taco, but we’re definitely making some changes to improve the customer experience—whether that’s through the food, menu, hours, or great happy hour options,” Allen said.
