Fuji Soba, a popular chain specializing in buckwheat noodles, has teamed up with confectionery giant Lotte to unveil an exciting new dish: the Coolish Hiyashi Tanuki Soba. This innovative offering merges the classic Japanese cold soba noodle experience with a delightful twist, incorporating Lotte’s Coolish ice cream brand.
Soba noodles are a staple in Japanese cuisine, enjoyed year-round for their versatility. They provide warmth in the winter as a hot dish and offer a refreshing option in the summer when served chilled. However, Fuji Soba’s latest creation elevates the traditional cold soba by introducing a scoop of ice cream to the mix, which includes noodles, tempura flakes, fried tofu, and sliced green onion.
Priced at ¥580 (approximately $3.85), the Coolish Hiyashi Tanuki Soba features a pouch of Coolish ice cream, which diners are encouraged to blend into the chilled soba broth. This unique combination of the typically savory broth, made with bonito stock, results in an unexpected sweet and savory flavor profile when mixed with the ice cream. While patrons can adjust the amount of ice cream to their taste, Fuji Soba recommends using the entire pouch for the optimal experience.
This distinctive dish is not only innovative but also limited in availability. It is offered as a time-limited, quantity-limited, and location-exclusive item, with only ten servings available each day. Currently, the dish can be found at Fuji Soba’s Ikebukuro and Gotanda locations in Tokyo. It will be available until August 31, 2024, after which it will relocate to the Akasaka branch from September 1 to September 30.
In a similar vein, McDonald’s has also expanded its menu in Japan with seasonal offerings, including the Watermelon Frappé and Banana Macaron, catering to the public’s demand for refreshing treats during the warmer months.
