Kansas City police arrested a suspect Wednesday believed to be involved in the recent burglary of Betty Rae’s Ice Cream shop in the River Market district. The arrest took place in Kansas City, Kansas, where methamphetamine was also discovered on the property, according to a statement from the Kansas City Police Department.
Captain Jake Becchina of the Kansas City Police Department confirmed the arrest, adding that more details would become available after police collaborate with prosecutors on Thursday to determine charges.
In a social media post, the department highlighted the ongoing commitment to solving the case. “Detectives have poured time and effort into this investigation, as they have with other small business crimes,” the department stated on X, formerly known as Twitter. “The work continues, and our detectives and officers remain dedicated to seeking justice. The suspect’s involvement in other crimes is also under investigation, and charges are pending the completion of the case file.”
This arrest follows the second break-in at the Betty Rae’s River Market location in the past month. The latest burglary occurred early Sunday morning when a man smashed a window with a rock and stole a safe containing several thousand dollars. During the previous incident last month, a burglar broke in through the back door and made off with cash, a cooler, peanuts, and pints of ice cream.
Owner and CEO Matt Shatto, who also owns Shatto Milk Company, has publicly criticized city leaders following the burglaries. Over the past month, Shatto and Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas have exchanged heated posts on social media, debating the city’s response to crime. The break-ins have led Shatto to reconsider the future of the River Market location.
