PJ’s Ice Cream, a beloved fixture in downtown Manteno, is poised for a change in ownership as current owners Brian and Tonya Hoots announce their decision to sell the business after eight years of operation. The couple made the announcement via a heartfelt Facebook post, indicating that the recently concluded year would be their last serving the community from their location at 41 W. Second St.
The Hoots purchased the business in August 2017 from Nick Carson and Michelle Furlan, who had run the establishment for a year following its founding by Rick and Paula Skelton in 2001. In their post, the Hoots expressed gratitude to the many customers who have supported them throughout their journey, acknowledging the ups and downs of running the business.
“Manteno is truly an amazing community,” they stated, reflecting on their experiences. The couple emphasized that their decision to sell was not made lightly, citing changes in their family life as their children grow older. “We know that it is time to step aside,” they wrote.
While the future owners remain uncertain, the Hoots reassured customers that unused plastic gift cards would transfer to the new ownership as part of the sale. The post concluded with appreciation for their time in the community: “Thank you so much; it’s been a great ride.”
Manteno Mayor Tim Nugent expressed hope that a new owner can be found, highlighting PJ’s Ice Cream as a valuable addition to the downtown area. “It’s in a great spot. It’s a nice amenity for the downtown,” he remarked.
