BUFFALO, N.Y. — Cookies & Cream, an ice cream shop located on Seneca Street in South Buffalo, remains closed following a break-in over the weekend.
Owner John Otto reported that a man gained entry through a side window late Saturday night. Upon discovering the disturbance, Otto found the cash register overturned and cash missing, despite the doors being locked. “I was a little confused at first, but it quickly became clear someone had come in,” he stated.
Otto, who also serves as a firefighter in Buffalo, noted that the intruder left a significant mess, including open freezers that resulted in ruined ice cream. “A detective responded immediately, and I spoke personally with the A District chief this morning, which means a lot when you’re part of the community,” Otto added.
The store plans to spend Tuesday cleaning up and anticipates reopening on Wednesday. Otto confirmed that the Elmwood Avenue location has remained open during this time.
He emphasized the importance of his staff in overcoming challenges. “Every small business owner has their own story. My young team has reached out to support each other, which is motivating,” he said.
Interestingly, while the intruder caused damage, he did not steal any ice cream cakes. “They’re too heavy, that’s the joke. He would have been slowed down if he took those,” Otto remarked, noting they were freshly made on Saturday morning.
In conversations with other business owners in the area, Otto learned that several nearby establishments were also targeted by the same suspect. Buffalo Police are actively investigating the incidents and encourage anyone with information to reach out to A District detectives or call the confidential tipline at 716-847-2255.
